Translation: Rusisan writer Egor Radov

A fragment from my translation of Radov's short story A Clone's Journal:

1.

I am sitting in the room in which I have spent my whole life, and solitarily, sadly, happily, joyfully and indifferently I look right at the center of the white wall before me, which gives birth to all colors, shapes and sensations within me. I don't know who I am, I don't remember how old I am, I don't know my name, my purpose, my birth or death; I don't even have a number, I have nothing, but I have an "I," just that initial feeling, and maybe, this is the key to my advantage, and contained right there is my felicity and purpose...

Today they gave me permission to keep a journal, though it's true, not on my own computer - from which I have obtained all my knowledge and ideas about everything since childhood - but rather in an ancient and old way: on something called a "manual typewriter," and only in one copy...

34.

Oh, what a day!.. I.. I hacked through that firewall!.. It's some kind of feeling... I can't find the right words... freedom, or something like it, gripped me, and I am ready to delve into the whirlpool of information that they've been hiding from me...

35.

For a while I couldn't make up my mind, didn't want to, was unable to write. Only today did I manage to collect my thoughts, strength, mood and feelings. So, I found out who I am, what I am, why and where. It is immense and nightmarish.

I'm a clone, that is, an exact copy of myself, who lives in the outer world. I am half, I am a part, I am a fraction, but I am still whole; everything that he (I) has (have), I have (he has); only I am here, and he is there.

I'll try, however, to write what I discovered.

The first clone was born at the end of the twentieth century... Some doctor cloned a sheep, and the principle became clear. Cloning people was initially forbidden, but clandestinely it was soon done, and then officially. To start, cloning was only achieved by taking DNA from an infant and implanting it in another woman, but then they began to produce clones in test tubes so every person could receive a "second I," which was nine months younger. After a weird plague caused by a virus that the military developed, the planet's population sharply decreased... The virus was finally overcome, but then there was a sharp dislocation of the earth's axis caused by a shift in the world due to extracted heavy metals concentrated in certain spots of the Earth...
